Our First European Motorhome Adventure – 2023

Motorhome Adventures 2 min read September 2, 2026

This was the very first time we had ever taken a motorhome abroad, and we were a mixture of excited, nervous and probably a little overwhelmed all at the same time.

We travelled through the Eurotunnel into France, full of excitement about what the next four weeks might bring. Our first overnight stop was in Tours, but unfortunately the weather had other ideas and the rain soon arrived.

We had set off in search of sunshine, so the next morning we decided to keep moving and head further south into Spain.

It meant plenty of driving for Lee, but all the miles were worth it when we finally arrived in Pamplona and started to feel like the adventure had really begun.

This trip became a huge learning experience for us. We had to work out how to navigate French and Spanish roads, understand the toll systems, find suitable places to stop, get used to driving a motorhome in another country and learn how everything worked as we travelled further south.

There were plenty of nerves along the way, but also that amazing feeling of freedom that comes with travelling by motorhome and not quite knowing what the next day will bring.

Over the course of four weeks, we travelled all the way down towards the Spanish coast, visited Benidorm, continued south as far as Gibraltar, and experienced so many different places along the way.

Looking back now, this trip was where our love of European motorhome travel really began.

We made mistakes, learned a lot, drove a lot of miles and discovered just how much we loved exploring somewhere completely new with our home on wheels behind us.

In this series, you can follow the whole journey with us as we learn the ropes, tackle the roads, work out the tolls, discover new places and gradually become more confident travelling through France and Spain.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like taking a motorhome abroad for the first time, this was ours.

Come along and watch the adventure from the very beginning.
